A child’s crying woke me from a deep slumber. Sleepily, I thought I was in a dream, but the
wailing grew louder and louder. I turned
over to reach for my husband, Dalton, but found only emptiness on his side of
the bed. My heart stopped and then
started beating out of control. The
child’s cries turned into heart wrenching screams. I bolted out of bed following the shrieks of
the small child. I blinked my eyes to
see where my husband had gone. No signs
of him anywhere. A lump formed in my
throat. Where was Dalton and where was
the crying child?
This was at Launch STS-114 called the Return To Launch. Jon and I could see the Columbia break up from our home in Houston. It is still a memory that I will never forget. I didn't sleep for four months thinking how I may have missed something in the six On Board Shuttle Flight Software Quality Audits for NASA final signoff on the flights. Ten years later my Dad called me on the tragic anniversary and said they had found it was a software problem. I broke out in tears. Then he said he was kidding.......
STS-114 is NASA's first Shuttle mission since the February 1st, 2003 loss of Columbia and her crew on mission STS-107. What follows is an account of the STS-114 mission, from the perspective of a photojournalist, and from the perspective of someone who witnessed the loss of Columbia first hand.
