Natives Expressions Art Show The Goddesses By Renne’ Siewers The Goddesses is an acrylic canvas print commissioned by a co-worker. The goddesses' faces are those of my co-worker’s mother, daughter, and co-worker. I repainted this canvas print wholly with acrylic, and it is different from the original. These are three goddesses from Western African folklore. Their goddesses’ names are Yemaya, Oshun, and Oya. Yemaya is considered the mother of all since she is the goddess of the living ocean. All life is believed to have started in the sea. Yemaya is motherly and protective of all her children , comforting them and cleansing away all their sorrows. It is thought she can cure infertility in women, and the cowrie shells symbolize her wealth. Yemaya is not easily angered, but when she does, she is destructive and intense, just like the sea during a storm.
